What do relative keys share

As you can see, both scales share the same seven notes. The only difference is the root note upon which the scale is built. If we take this a step further and harmonize the scale , we see that the A minor scale consists of the same chords as the C major scale. The difference is the tonal center, or the tone which the music is centered around. You can use the exact same chords, scales etc. If the music is centered around a C major chord progression or melody, you would consider the key to be C major.

Conversely, if the music is centered around an A minor chord progression or melody, the key would be A minor. Because the relative minor is always the 6th degree of the major scale, their intervalic relationship never changes.

To put this another way, the root note of the relative minor scale is always in the same location relative to the root of the major scale. On the guitar, you can find the root of the relative minor down three frets from the major root. We can confirm this using the C major pentatonic scale. If we list out the notes of the G major scale and take the 6th degree, we see that the relative minor is E minor. If you want to get from the relative major to the relative minor you simply need to count down 3 semitones from the relative major.

Have a look at this example on a keyboard:. You can see that if I want to get from C major to its relative minor I start on C and count down 3 semitones and reach A. Therefore, the relative minor of C major is A minor. If I want to get from E major to its relative minor, again I count down 3 semitones and reach C sharp. So, the relative minor of E major is C sharp minor. All you need to do is to count up 3 semitones from the relative minor and you will reach the relative major.

Have a look at this example:. If I want to get from F sharp minor to its relative major. Count up 3 semitones and I get to A major. In music, relative keys are two different keys in which one is major and one is minor, and they share a common set of notes. Relative keys are the most closely related keys in music, because they share the exact same notes.

They are closely related because they share the same amount of flats or sharps in their key signature, and are always separated by 3 semitones. Usually you will come across the term Relative Key when also talking about parallel keys , which we also have a post on if you want to learn about them!
